Founder and Chairman of the Board
John A. Dutra provides strategic advice, planning and oversight on all corporate activities. Before organizing DEI in 1999, John held the position of CEO/President of Dutra Realty Enterprises, Inc., a real estate brokerage he founded in 1972 and sold in 1999. The vertically integrated firm included six Bay Area residential real estate offices, first and second mortgage companies, a wholly- owned real estate investment subsidiary, and a relocation division. Prior to its sale, the firm exceeded $900,000,000 in annual sales and employed more than 250 real estate agents and an administrative staff of 35 associates.
John served on the Fremont Planning Commission from 1980 to 1984. In 1986, he was elected to the Fremont City Council, where he served for 10 1/2 years. John then was elected to the California State Assembly in 1998. While serving the then maximum of three, two-year terms, John was a member of numerous standing committees, including, among others, Budget, Housing and Community Development, Judiciary, Insurance, and chaired the Transportation, Information Technology, and Veteran Affairs Committees.
John served from 1952 to 1956 in the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman, with one year as a medic attached to the Marine Corps. He is a graduate of San Jose State University where he earned a B.S. in Business and Industrial Management and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration.
